Retainers and Lash Pads

Postby rc240z » Mon Jan 17, 2011 7:32 pm

Hi Guys,

I am looking for retainers and Lash Pads for my reground Iski cam.

My preference would be for retainers that take the L seris lash pad, but will settle for U-20 retainers and lash pads.

Thanks,

Ron

Ron,
My engine uses Toyota spring keepers and lash pads. You might be able to go that route. You might give Dave Rebello a call and see what he says. I'm 99.9% sure thats what he used on my head (its what I remember him saying.)

Interesting Will, I guess it would be a specific set of Toyota parts...Not sure that Dave would tell me. But, I will give him a shout.

Thanks,

I called Dave, he says you have a different set up and not something he would run in a race motor :(

Back to square one. Does anyone know the taper of the keepers on a roadster. I am looking at having a set of L series retainers reworked to work on a roadster.

Thanks,

Ron,
I wonder what Dave meant by "not something he would run on a race motor" A statement like that doesn't exactly instill a lot of confidence. It might be a little heavier than running Titanium keepers ect, but its been reliable to this point. He was even suggesting that I might want to run even more cam, but if there is some sort of instability or something along those lines I don't know that I want to.

Dave was not specific, maybe because I was treading on one of his tricks or maybe because it isn't a good idea. No way to know.

He indicated that your valve stems might have a larger than stock diameter and that would not work for my application.

Hard to know for sure.

The valve stems should be smaller than stock. Eh, its working so I'm not going to worry about it.

Ron,
Your best bet is to have some valves made with 8mm stems then you can use L-series retainers, keepers and lash pads. This is the best fix IMO.

Thanks Mike, I have valves for the motor already :( and would like to use what I have. I am tempted to have a set of retainers made to work with L series lash pads etc.

You can do that. Dean used to sell some retainers that would fit. I've also seen valves turned down to 8mm just on the ends to use L-series hardware. You'll need to machine the keeper groove as well. Next rebuild have the 8mm stem valves made and replace the guides. Less weight, better flow and easier to find parts.

Dean does not have the retainers any longer, 11/32" custom valves already exist for the motor so I would rather not buy new valves, and have new guides installed. I don't think we will turn down the top valves to 8mm although that is an option.

I would like to find the "right" parts for the car.

Every so often I am reminded of the kindness of others. Yesterday I received an email from a member on this site who offered to send me the parts I need to solve my valvetrain issues.

I will be sure to pay it forward, thanks!

The correct ones were made by Schneider Racing Cams and they had them during the 90's. They supplied springs and retainers. I called them recently and they discontinued them because they were only selling a couple of sets a year so I asked if they had a drawing and they said no and that the place that made them went out of business and the drawing went with them.

I thought about making some but the demand seems too small to make the project worthwhile.

Thanks Stan, this is a difficult situation, I have another vendor that can make them, but they will not be cheap because of such low demand.
