The locking cap is really really important. About two years ago I got bumped from the rear and the friction cap came off and put brake fluid on the exhaust. An ensuing change of events (on-board extinguisher did not work, etc), the car burned badly.
I now have a locking cap and replace the fire bottle when I replace belts.
